Artistic Director/Owner Carryl Slobotkin

The power of dance has been witnessed often at Jazz Unlimited over the past forty-one years. The former students who have grown up to be teachers, the young performers who come to train in the same studio their parents once did, and the laughter and joy of dancers in their sixth consecutive hour of weekend rehearsal are all proof of the positive influence of quality dance education. Perhaps most remarkable is the fact that even after four decades, Jazz Unlimited is just as relevant and vital as it was when the studio first opened its doors. In a world where stories of childhood taunting and teenaged bullying make headlines all too often, Jazz unlimited continues to offer countless young people what is perhaps the most important power of dance: an outlet of self-expression in which they can truly be themselves.

The birth of Jazz Unlimited was a direct result of artistic director Carryl Slobotkin's recognition of the power of dance in her own life. When she was a young girl, Carryl's parents enrolled her in dance classes. Carryl quickly fell in love with the art, and she honed her natural talent through hours of diligent practice. As a young adult, Carryl's hard work paid off, and she enjoyed a successful career dancing with the world-renowned New York City Rockettes as well as choreographing for the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders. Her experiences as a choreographer helped Carryl recognize that although she loved being on stage, her greatest joy came from guiding other performers to discover the power of their own gifts. By creating Jazz Unlimited, Carryl found a way to turn her true passion into her life's work.

Forty-one years later, Carryl has watched hundreds of her young dancers take the stage before audiences in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Las Vegas. Under Carryl's guidance, her students have toured Europe, cruised to Mexico, danced through China, and performed at Carnegie Hall. This year, members of the Jazz Unlimited Dance Ensemble had the opportunity to showcase their performance on the nationwide broadcast of Paula Abdul's television show Live to Dance. Jazz Unlimited continues to attract top choreographers from around the country, and the quality of Carryl's hand-picked staff is unmatched. As a result of its well-deserved reputation for excellence, Dance Spirit and Dance Team magazines have recognized Jazz Unlimited as one of the top fifty "Studios on the Move" in the United States.
